PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALANGAL - PANDYA NAADU ( NEAR KARAIKUDI & DEVAKOTTAI )

After Completing the Dharshans of Paadal Petra Sthalangal of NADU NAADU, on 23rd and 24th  September 2011, had been to the Paadal Petra Sthalangal  of Pandya Naadu. Out of 14 Temples, I had covered 5 temples already when I was working  for M/s  SPIC, Tuticorin Fertilizer Plant. ( Thirunelveli, Kurtralam, Madurai  Aalavai, Thiruparankunram, Rameswaram ). Had been to Thiruchuzhi, but I did not gone to the temple, long back, not aware of it.

This time I had been to Three Paadal Petra Sthalangal of Pandya Naadu and Thiruvasakam Paadal Petra Sthalam , Thiruperundurai ( Aavudayar Koil) The details I gathered and the photos I had taken through my mobile are enclosed.

251/7. THIRUPUNAVAYIL
(Since I reached the temple about 7.00 o’ clock night I could not take clear day light pictures, through my mobile.)

This is the 251st Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam on the banks of river Paambaru ( Sarba nadhi ) and 7th sthalam of Pandya nadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan : Sri Viruthapureeswarar, Sri Pazhampathi Nathar, Sri Mahalingeswarar.
Iraivi    : Sri Bhiruntha Nayaki, Sri Periya Nayaki.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. The Moolavar gopuram is taller than the raja gopuram. 
  2. In koshtam Thirumal and Anjanayer are installed instead of Lingothbavar. Hence this temple is believed to be 3000 years old. Iraivan is called as Pazhampathi Nathar. 
  3. It was said that the temple at Tanjore was constructed by seeing this temple. To prove this the Moolavar Lingam is 9 feet high  and aavudayar is 33 feet circumference & 5.5 feet high  and komuki is 3.5 feet. 
  4. Dhakshinamoorthy is in Yoga posture of unique style. 
  5. It is believed that Worshiping Shiva in this temple is equal to worshiping of all 14 temples of Pandya naadu ( 14 Lingams are installed ). 
  6. The Vinayagar is Aakanda Vinayagar ( Aakandan – Indiran -  worshiped the lord.) 
  7. Kudavarai Kali ( aroopam ) temple is on the north east corner of the temple premises, which we can see only through a mirror.
HOW TO REACH :

  1. Buses available from Aavudayar Koil, Aranthangi and Thiruvadanai.
  2. Taxi to pick up and drop available from Aavudayar Koil, ( they may charge Rs 600.00 to Rs 1000. ( The road is toooooo  bad. )

253/9. THIRU AADANAI(Now this place is called Thiruvadanai.) 
This is the 253rd Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 9th  Sthalam in Pandya naadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan: Sri Aathirathneswarar, Sri Ayagajaeswarar
Iraivi:    Sri Snehavalli, Sri Anbayeravalli.

Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. Due to curse of Thurvasa muni, Varunan’s son Vaaruni has got the Elephant body with goat's head ( ஆடு + ஆனை = ஆடானை ). By worshiping Lord Shiva of this temple the curse was removed and he got the original shape. Hence this place is called as Thiruaadanai. 
  2. Moolavar Lingam is made out of Blue Rathinam. It is believed that Suryan installed and worshiped the moolavar. 
  3. Sannadhi for Vinayagar, Murugan, Somaskandhar, Lakshmi and Sabamandapam. 
  4. Ambal is in a separate sannadhi in chathurpuja posture facing east
  5. Corridor is beautifully constructed  with rock pillars with many sculptures. 
  6. The Raja gopuram is 130 feet high with nine tiers. 
  7. The temple is under the control of Ramanathapuram Rajah’s family.
HOW TO REACH
  1. Buses from Karaikudi ( 20 KM ), Devakottai ( 10 KM) to Thondi passes through this place Thiruvadanai. 
  2. Buses from Trichy, Madurai to Thondi passes through Thiruvaadanai.

254/16. THIRUKAANAPPEAR ( THIRUKAANAPPERUR)  
This place is now called as Kalayar Koil )
This is the 254th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 10th  sthalam in Pandya nadu. Thiruganasambandar & Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of lord shiva of this temple.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. In Sundarar’s dream, when was at Thiruchuzhi,  Lord Shiva came in  the form of Kalai maadu with sendu in one hand and Chuzhi on the forehead and said he is in Kanappear. Since Iraivan came in the form of Kaalai maadu the place is called as Kaalayar Koil. 
  2. There are three Shiva Sannadhi with two Raja gopuram in a single premises. 
  3. The sanctum sanctorium is  few feet below the ground level. 
  4. The center  Kaaleeswarar is old and Paadal Petra swayambu lingam. 
  5. From the tallest gopuram we can see the Madurai temple Gopurams. There is a local kummi -கும்மி song available for this Rajagopuram.  "மதுரை கோபுரம் தெரியக் கட்டிய  மருதுபாண்டியன்   வாராண்டி " )
  6. During Britisher's period Maruthu Pandiyar saved the gopuram by surrendering himself and latter he was killed by the Britishers. 
  7. Godeses Kaali worshiped Shiva and turned to sornam ( Gold colour ) from black.

  1. Buses available from from Karaikudi, Siva gangai, Devakottai, Madurai to this place.
  2. On the train route get down at Naattarasan Kottai on the Chennai to Rameswararm and Trichy to Manamadurai.

THIRU PERUNDURAI (AAVUDAYAR KOIL )

This is one of the Thiruvasakam, by Manikkavasakar Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam.   

Iraivan : Sri Aathmanatheswarar, Sri Guruswamy, Sri Paramaswamy, Sri Aathmanathar
Iraivi    : Sri Yogambal.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. This temple is famous for its sculpture and architecture. Kodungai of the mandapams were made in a single stone shaped to small thickness and joined together. ( even to day the sculpters used to enter in an agreement for constructing anew temple, “ Kodungaikal will not be similar to Aavudayar Koil “). Bullet marks by the britshers can also be seen. 
  2. It is amazing to see the stone statues on the pillars and the stone chains hanging from the roof. There is no Nandhi, Kodimaram and Palipeedam.
  3. In this temple both Iraivan and Iraivi  has no idols, since both are in arropam state.
  4. The naivethiyam is boiled rice satham kept on the stone slab in front of the Aavudayar. Only steam from the satham is the naivethyam.
  5. The vegetables offered in the temple are Bitter guard, Keerai, which are not offered in any other temples. ( To teach vedam to Anthanar children, Iraivan was offered keerai, bitter guard by the Anthanars).  
  6. Only Aaavudai is in the temple, the place is called as Aavudayar Koil.
  7. The Raja Gopuram is of seven tiers, which is visible from a long distance.
  8. Sthala viruksham is Kurantha Maram, under which Lord taught Manikkavasakar. The specialty of the tree leaves is, they have three different smells. 
HOW TO REACH:
  1. Frequent buses available from Aranthanki on Aranthanki ( 14 KM ) to Mimeesal.
  2. Buses available to Aranthanki from Tanjore, Madurai, Chennai, Karaikudi, Trichy etc.

  1. Dear sir, are there any basic logding/bathing facilities in Avudayar kovil?

    Also how is the bus connectivity from Avudayar Kovil to Tirupunavasal and further to Tiruvadanai?
