PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALANGAL – IN & AROUND KUMBAKONAM – DHARSHAN -I, DAY-2

Continuation to the previous post...
15-07-2012. SUNDAY.
Planned to cover only 5 temples during morning session and return to Chennai. Since I was little tired hired a Taxi for the half day  @  Rs 900.00. Kottaiyur, Innambur, Thirupurampiyam, Thiruvaikavoor and Thiruvijayamangai were covered before 10.30 Hrs. Some more time was left out for the half day,  covered Thiruvalanchuzhi, Thirupalaithurai and Thirunalloor. Returned to Kumbakonam by 12.30 Hrs from there came to Chennai around 20.00 Hrs. Totally I was able to cover 18 Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal in and around Kumbakonam during my two day trip to Kumbakonam. Thanks to  Lord Shiva for given me the peaceful dharshan in all the temples. 


98/44 – KOTTAIYUR  - ( Now this place is called as CHOZHICHURAM, BABURAJAPURAM )
This is the 98th Devaram Paadal petra Shiva Sthalam and 44th sthalam on the north side of river cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord shiva of this temple.

Iraivan: Sri Kodeeswarar
Iraivi   : Sri Kanthuga greedambal, Sri Bandhadu nayagi

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. It was believed that Lord Shiva appeared from Aamanakku (kottai) plant.  ( In Tamil it is called Erandam )
  2. Markandeyar worshiped Lord shiva of this temple.
  3. Lord of this temple shown as Kodi Vigneswara, Kodi Ammai, Kodi murugan,  to Pathira Yogi Muni.
  4. It is believed that Paavam and punniyam in this temple will be multiplied to Kodi.
  5. Kottai Kottaiyaga is seen on moolavar.
  6. Navagraha are with their respective vaganams and enthiram on back beautifully chiseled. Chandran and suryan are with chariot & horses.
  7. Ashta buja Durgai is seen with  right leg in front is worth to see.
  8.  Vishnu durgai in outer prakaram.
  9. It was learned that Kodi Vinayagar is suyambu, when it was tried to take out for renovation even after digging 20 feet they could not find the end of the base.
  10. Eranda munivar in meditating posture in the front mandapam.

  2. Town bus  from Kumbakonam to Swamimalai passes through this place.

99/45 – INNAMBAR.

This is the 99th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 45th Sthalam on north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Thiruganasambandar and Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan: Sri Ezhutharinathar, Sri Taanthonreesar
Iraivi   : Sri Sugunthakunthalambigai, Sri Nithyakalyani

Some of the important features of this temple are.....
  1. Rajagopuram in 5 stage and there is no kodimaram.
  2. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Pitchandavar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Arthanaareeswarar, Bramha, Katchikodutha Naathar ( In lingothbavar)., Durgai.
  3. Lot of trees ( Fruit) are grown by the temple peoples.
  4. Moolasthanam is little high.
  5. Sudhai sirpangal in moolavar vimanam gajabrista shape.
  6. Moolavar aavudai is little big.
  7. Ambal in sathurbujam in standing posture.
  8. There are two Ambal sannadhies.

100/46 THIRUPURAMBIYAM

This is the 100th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 46th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha nadu. Moovar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan: Sri Sakshinaatheswarar, Sri Saksheeswarar, Sri Punnaivana nathar
Iraivi   : Sri ishuvaani, Sri Karumbadu Solliayammai

Some of the important features of this temple are.....
  1. It was believed that Lord Shiva gave satchi to a Chetti lady.
  2. Sri Guhambigai Ambal holding Sri Murugan in the hip idol made of wax holding in a separate mandapam. Only  thylakkaappu.
  3. Separate temple for Guru Dhakshinamoorthy.
  4. Vinayagar is special in this temple, made of Chippi, Kilinjal and sea foam. Honey Abishekam is performed once in a year on Vinayaga Chathurthi day. All the honey will be absorbed in the idol itself.
  5. Two Ambal temples.
  6. The idols in the koshtam are damaged.

102-48 THIRU VAIKKVOOR.

This is the 102nd Devaram Paadal petra Shiva Sthalam and 48th sthalam  on north side of river Cauvery in Chozha nadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.
Iraivan: Sri Vilvavaneswarar, Sri Vilvanathar
Iraivi   : Sri Sarvajana rakshaki, Sri Valakkai nayagi.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. This temple celebrates Maha Shiva Rathri in a grand manner. This relates to a story of a hunter who came to this place in search of a deer. Lord Shiva to save the  deer came in the form of a Tiger. On seeing the tiger the hunter climbed up the tree and unknowingly he plugged the leaves ( Vilvam ) and thrown on the tiger without sleep through out night. The leaves fell on the tiger/ Shiva, hence the hunter got blessing from Lord shiva.     ( The suthai sirpam at the entrance) )
  2. Nandhi is facing same direction ( East ) like moolavar to threaten and chase Emadharman
  3. There is No Rajagopuram.
  4. There is no Navagraha sannadhi
  5. Moolavar is suyambu.
  6. Two Durgai Amman.
  7. In Artha mandapam lord Shiva in the form of Thakshinamoorthy with a stick in hands to chase Emadharman. Bramha and Vishnu are on both sides.
  8. In koshtam Ganapathy, Pitchandavar, Agasthiya munivar, Lingothbavar, Arthanaareeswarar, Durgai amman.

101-47 THIRUVIJAYAMANGAI.


This is the 101st  Devaram Paadal petra Shiva Sthalam and 47th Sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Thiruganasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Iraivan: Sri Vijaya Nathar
Iraivi   : Sri Mangalambigai, Sri Mangai Nayagi.

Some of the important features of this temple are..... 
  1. The temple is small but maintained beautifully. The kumbabishekam might have conducted in recent years.
  2. Only Dhakshinamoorthy in koshta moortham.
  3. Moolavar vimanam is higher than the entrance small rajagopuram.
  4. There is a scar on moolavar due to Arjunan’s arrow.

  1. The temple is between Thiruvaikavoor and Thirupurambiyam, 100 meters of the road.
  2. 2 Km from Thiruvaikavoor.

142-25 THIRUVALAMCHUZHI

This is the 142nd Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 25th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha. Thiruganasambandar and Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 


Iraivan: Sri Sadaimudinathar, Sri Kapartheesar, Sri Chenchadai  
            nathar, Sri Karpaganatheswarar, Sri Valanchuzhi nathar
Iraivi   : Sri Periyanayagi, Sri Birugantha Nayagi.

Some of the important features of this temp[le are..... 
  1. There is White Pillayar temple in front of the east side Rajagopuram. People mainly come for worshiping white Pillayar. There is single stone slab jolly work to be watched in front of sannadhi.
  2. Sani Bhagavan in a separate sannadhi.
  3. Ambal in a separate temple facing east.
  4. Koshta moothangal Natarajar, Pitchadanar, Narthana Vinayagar, Thakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Naanmugan, Arthanaareeswarar, Durgai,
  5. There are about 54 lingams in the outer prakaram.
  6. Karuvarai in agali amaipu.

136-119 THIRUPAALATHURAI.

This is the 136th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 119th Sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 


Iraivan: Sri Paalai vaneswarar, Sri Paalaivana nathar.
Iraivi   : Sri Thavalavennanaiyal , Sri Thavalaambal.

Some of the important features are......
  1. Thirumal, Brahma , Vishnu, Devars, Vasistar worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple.
  2. Arjuna married Uloobi from paadhala logam after learning the bow and arrow technique.
  3. Tharukavanam ( Thiruparaithurai near Trichy ) munivars had done vaelvi, the tiger came out was made to chase Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva killed Tiger and he used the leather for wearing.
  4. There is no sipam in the Rajagopuram.
  5. Lord Shiva and Ambal are in Kalyana Kolam.
  6. Natarajar dance is called Oorthava thandavam.

137-120 THIRUNALLOOR

This is the 137th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 120th Sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Thiruganasambandar and Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord shiva of this temple. 


Iraivan: Sri Panchavarneswarar, Sri Kalyana Sundeswarar, Sri Periyandeswarar
Iraivi.  : Sri Girisundari, Sri Parva sundari, Sri Kalyanasundari

Some of the important features of this temple are......
  1. The material of the Lord Shiva Idol was not known. But lot of holes made by vandukal are seen. The Moolavar will change his colour to 5 during the day, via, Thamiram, Light red, Molten gold, Navarathna green, lastly, the colour will not be able to predict. Hence The lord is called Panchavarneswarar. ( During my dharshan the colour was in golden colour)
  2. Shiva gave thiruvadi theekchai in this temple for Appar. Hence thiruvadi is kept on each devotee ( Like Sadari in Perumal temples )
  3. It is also one of the mada koil constructed by Ko Chenkat Chozhan.
  4. Amar neethi nayanar attained mukthi in this temple.
  5. Vayu and Aadhisheshan fought in this place.
  6. Thiruvarur moolavar was kept 3 days in the temple and worshiped before installation at Thiruvarur by Musukuntha Chakravarthy, which he got from Indiran.
  7. The moolavar valam should be in Somasundara method, since it is believed that Lord Shiva’s head and hair are at the back side of the moolavar. Hence nobody should cross the back side of the moolavar.
  8. Suthai Sirpam of Lord Shiva and Sri Parvathy’s marriage is seen at the back wall of moolavar.
  9. The temple is under renovation and preparing for the kumbabishekam.

  1. Thirunalloor is  2 km from Kumbakonam to Tanjore, Papanasam junction on Valangaiman road.
