HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple was constructed during Pallava period. Vikrama Chozha period inscriptions are found in DevaSena Amman Temple. When the temple was in dilapidated condition the same was reconstructed by Srimath Chidambaram Swamigal, who attained samadhi in 1659 CE. His descendants are the Trustees of this temple. Esat Rajagopuram has the 17-18th Century paintings of Kantha Purana.

The 17th Century composed "Mathikettan Drama" mentions Thiruporur Murugan, Kailasanathar and Vembadi Vinayagar.

The Central Govt Archaeological department documented 7 inscriptions, which includes 720 CE Rajasimha Pallava period inscription.

Kulothunga Chozha-I's ( 1076 CE ) inscription records the endowment of burning lamp and continuance of Poojas of this temple. For the same arrangements are made.

Vikrama Chozha also had given gift of lands to this temple.

A Person belongs to Ilanallur, had gifted land for the Uchi kala pooja.

Vijakanda Gopalan's period inscription records the endowment of burning two lamps.

Inscriptions also mentions the Utsava murtis of this temple.

The rajagopuram was completely painted and a new arch was also constructed near Temple Tank. Outer parakaram and inner prakaram were completely paved with granite slabs.

LEGENDS
This is one of the arupadai veedu of Murugan, where the demon Soorapadman was killed on the air.

As per the legend  Maha Vishnu and his consort MahaLakshmi were cursed by Kanva Maharishi. They prayed Shiva to get rid of the Curse. Shiva came to this place and blessed them. Hence Thiruporur temple is a very significant, dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva  and Sri Murugan. As per sthala purana, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena gave protection to Devas and expounded the meaning of Pranava to Agastya Muni.

According to another legend, Murugan enunciated the principle of pranava or reality to the Devas here
