SRI MURUGANATHESWARAR TEMPLE, MAMBAKKAM, SRI VEERA ANJANEYAR, PUDHUPAKKAM & SRI PASUPATHESWARAR TEMPLE AT VELICHAI

On 21st Saturday I had visited the less known Shiva Temple at Mambakkam. Originally my plan was to have the dharshan of Sri Anjaneyar at Pudhupakkam. Since Mambakkam is at the junction of Kelambakkam to Vandalur road. The Shiva Temple is at the beginning of the Village and Gurukkal is living nearby in a typical Agraharam house. The temple is on the road curve and pose danger of demolition when the road is expanded. The details of the temple are as follows.

MAMBAKKAM SHIVA TEMPLE

Iraivan : Sri Muruganatheswarar
Iraivi    : Sri Deivanayaki.
Some of the important features of this temple are...
  1. Thirukkulam is in front and the temple is facing east.
  2. There is no rajagopuram and Dwajasthambam.
  3. Sannadhi for Sri Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Anjaneyar, Sandikeswarar.
  4. Ambal is in standing posture with abaya and varadha hastham.
  5. In Koshtam Dhakshinamoorthy ( in Vinayagar’s place) and Durgai.
  6. 12th to 14th century epigraph is at the base of moolavar wall.

  1. Mambakkam is on the way to Kelambakkam to Vandalur main road.
  2. The temple is on the mambakkam to Medavakkam road. At the beginning of the Village  from Medavakkam.

From Mambakkam, turned to left and I proceeded to Pudhupakkam, about 4 KM before Kelambakkam. Sri Anjaneyar is on a Hill, left side of main road.

PUDHUPAKKAM SRI VEERA ANJENAYER TEMPLE

Some of the important features of this temple are....
  1. Sarvasakthi Vinayagar Sannadhi is at the base of the  hill.
  2. Sudhai Periya thiruvadi and Chinna Thiuvadi are at the beginning of steps.
  3. The temple is on a small hill with about 100 steps neatly paved. Road facility is also there to climb up to the top of the hill with vehicle.
  4. Moolavar is of relief looking north.
  5. The sanctum was originally built with stone and latter new structures were added.
  6. Sannadhi of Sri Ramar, Seetha lakshmanars is at the front of Sri Anjaneyar.

After dharshan while I cross the main road, happened to notice the sign board of Sri Pasupatheswarar, Prithiyankara Devi temple at Velichai village. The village is about 2 KM on the south side of Kelambakkam to Vandalur main road. The 2 KM stretch is a typical village dusty road with sine wave formation ( bumby).

Some of the important fetures of this temple are...
  1. The temple is being managed by the present Sri SadaShiva Brammendrar, who was born as Sri Thathreyar, Viswakarma in the previous births.  Sri Bramendar was a close associate to Kumbakonam Thiruvisanallur Ayyaval. Sri Sadguru was born in the place called Bhagavathapuram. He is also praised as Gnancheri Gnanigal.
  2. The Shiva temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram, Palipedam and nandhi.
  3. Ambal name is Sri Simapriyal facing south.
  4. In side the complex sannadhis for Sri Viswaroopa Anjaneyar, Sri Seetha Lakshmana Ramachandra Moorthy, Vinayagar, Sri Subramaniyar, Priyathangara Devi and moorthangal of Shiva with three head, Vallalar, Adhi moorthikal, Suryan and  Chandran.
  5. In front of Temple Sri Bramendar’s jeeva Samadhi mud with Shiva Lingam and Vilva tree.
  6. Present Sri Sadguru was at the temple artha mandapam  in mounam when I visited the temple. 
HOW TO REACH :
  1. Velichai is 2 KM off from Kelambakkam to Vandalur Main road.
  2. The road on the opposite to Sri Veera Anjaneyar Temple of Pudhupakkam leads to Velichai Village.

After Dharshan of Sri Paupatheswarar returned back to main road and took the Kelambakkam to vandalur main road. Reached home via Mambakkam, Ponmar, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai and Velachery.

R.E.A.C.H. HERITAGE TOUR TO THIRUNATHAR KUNDRU, NEKANUR PATTI AND THONDUR ( BRAMMI SCRIPTS ) NEAR GINGEE, THIUVANNAMALAI.

18, February 2015.
We have traveled from the pre-historic to the latest epigraphic places around Gingee near Thiruvannamalai on 15th February 2015. The Jain religion was spread widely between Kanchipuram and Thiruvannamalai. Thirunathar Kundru,  Nekanurpatti, Nekanur, Thondur  are the places we visited Through R.E.A.C.H foundation and was guide by Mr Ramachandran, The Epigraphist and Mr Vakula Varadharajan, the historian.  During the journey  we had  learned a lot from Mr Ramachandran & Mr Vakula Varadharajan. They explained the history  importance of each place.
As usual we have started our journey late by 30 minutes. On the way  we had our breakfast  and purchased fresh vegetable from a farm at a cheaper rate. Our journey route was Mel Sithamoor Gingee – Thirunathar Kundru- Gingee- Nekanur patti – Mel Olakkur – Thondur. The details are as follows.

MEL CHITAMUR.
  • We visited Sri Bhagavan Parsuvannathar, a Jain Temple managed by Jena Kanchi Jain Mutt.
  • The temple looks like a Hindu temple with Rajagopuram , Dwajasthambam,Palipeedam, moolavar vimanam,Dwarabalakar at the entrance of sanctum,  etc,.
  • Sannadhis for Sri Dharma Devi, Sri Neminath the 20th Theerthangarar, relative to Lord Sri Krishan., Sri Brahma Devar, Sri Jena Vani, Sri Gananathar, Sri Padmavathy Devi with snake hood above head, Sri Jwala Malini Devi, and navagrahas not the Suryan, Sani etc.
  • The Temple was built after 13th century. But a recent year’s epigraph is available at the entrance of Rajagopuram.
  • The archakar recites mantras in Sanskrit.
  • On two places pot of water was kept for pigeon. Mr Vakula Varadharajan pointed out that one portion of the vimanam is called as Kabuthar means pigeon in Hindi, where pigeon used to stay.

THIRUNATHAR  KUNDRU.
  • This is a Jains monument under the control of Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI ) on a Kundru with recently laid steps to climb up.
  • There  is a Brammi epigraph and a Vatteluthu epigraph. The 8th  century  epigraph describes that a Jain monk called Eesura Badarar passed away after  30 days fasting without food and water. 
  • The Brammi epigraph of 6th century describes that a Jain Monk called Chandra nandhi  passed away 57 days fasting without food and water.  
  • There is a natural cave. Near that there are 24 Theerthangars reliefs on a big rock.

ஐம்பத் தேழன சனந நோற்ற சந்திர நந்தி ஆ சீரீகரு  நிசீதிகை (Chandira nandhi Jain monk who passed away after 57 days fasting. This is in Brammi.)
முப்பது நாளன  சன நோற்ற  இஸிர படாரர் நிசீதிகை ( The Jain monk who passed away after 30 days fasting - This is Tamil Vatteluthu) 

 24 Theethangar’s relief 

NEKANUR PATTI
This place is called as ‘ADUKKU MALAI’ otherwise Adukkuparai by the locals. There is no proper approach road to this place. At one point our van got struck up between two rocks and we have reached the spot by walk.
  • This is monument is a three individual big rocks sitting one after the another. 
  • The Brammi script is available on the base big rock. The inscription describes the construction of school. The epigraph is a 4th century one.
  • Under the big rock there is prehistoric painting. Still looks good in white colour. This is estimated to be of 1000 BC.
  • There is no fencing to safe guard this monument and there is no sign or warning board.
HOW TO REACH :
  • The Place Nekanur patti is on the Road Melakkalvai to Neganur, turn right before right and the Adukku parai a about 2 KM.

We had our lunch under a neem tree on the road side. The local ladies helped us with water to wash our hands. After lunch we proceeded towards Thondur through the villages – Nekanur – Eechur – Amma Kulam – Mukkunam – Mel Olakkur. At Mel Olakkur we had seen  two reliefs installed on the road side.

Mel Olakkur 
  • The one is Jeasta Devi ( Moodevi or Mootha Devi ) with her daughter Agni matha and her son Nandhi devar Locals calls this as Durgai Amman or a Ellai Amman  ( Limit point  for the village ).
  • The other one is a Three warriors holding sword and kedayam. This is a Nadukal for the warriors who lost their lives in a war.
  • This is very much similar to the relief found at Chunambedu.
  • As per the historians both reliefs are of 6th century.

A Nadu kal  for warriors 
PASUMALAI PADUKAI. ( THONDUR )
  • This is a Jains monument with a Jain monk relief and 3 beds. 
  • The Brammi inscriptions are not legible to read. From the document The samanar beds are chiselled by Mosi as per the instruction of Senkayan. 
  • The brammai inscriptions are  between 200 to 300 AD .

Then we proceeded towards Thondur via Mel Olakkur which was about 3 KM from Mel Olakkur.

THONDUR
Anandha Sayana Perumal was chiselled on a huge rock in the midst of paddy field. Perumal is in  anandha sayanam on Adhisheshan ( 5 hood snake )  keeping head on the left side which is rare. In the neck throat is not visible instead the surface is smooth. The ‘Greedam‘  is of Combodian style hence this was chiselled by Pallavas came from Combodia. This was built in the year 780 AD. In front Perumal’s concert in the form of Tablet. Inscriptions are there on the back.  but are not legible.

It was over by 17.30 Hrs and  everybody has exhausted. Started our return journey to Chennai Via Vandhavasi. Really it was a pleasant tour. Mr Ramanathan  had co-ordinated in a nice manner with good break fast and Lunch. Thanks to all the participants.
