...a Continuation post.
26th September 2016.
After joining Ponniyin Selvan Group, one of my ambitions was to visit Panchavan madevi Pallipadai, Rajarajan Pallipadai ( Since Udayulur Shiva Lingam is not acceped as Rajarajan’s Pallipadai, we skipped Udayalur). Visiting Panchavan Madevi’s Pallipadai came to true. The temple was closed when we reached. But we could get the keys of the Rajagopuram entrance and mandapam entrance, from nearby house.
PANCHAVANMADEVI PALLIPADAI. ( Panchvan Maadevicharam )
This temple was constructed by Rajendra Chozhan in memory of his step mother Panchavan Madevi. This Pallipadai temple is about a 1 KM from Patteeswaram Shiva Temple. Locals will guide you, if you ask for Ramanathan Kovil. ( How this temple is named after Ramanathan Temple, do not Know ). The temple is in the midst of fields with a three tier Rajagopuram. The temple consists of a muka mandapam, artha manddapam and the sanctum. In deva koshtam Vinayagar, Picsha theyvar, Dhakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai. ( It was believed that both Dhakshinamurthy and Picshadanar may belongs to Nandhivarma, a Pallava period CE 710 to 715 ). The inscriptions are there through out the athistanam. The inscription says “பழையாறையான முடிகொண்ட சோழபுரத்துப் பள்ளிப்படை பஞ்சவன் மாதேவிச்சரம்”. In the same inscription mentions about Rajendra’s lieutenant Arulmozhiyaana Uththama Chozha Pirammarayan and one of the saiva Lakuleesa madam and his leader Lakuleesa Pandithar. The compound walls are constructed with brick. The artha mandapam Nandhi and Pillars are of Pazhuvettaraiyars period.
A brief history of this Pallipadai Temple.
This temple was built by the Chozha King Rajendran the son of Rajaraja – I. to his step mother Panchavan Madevi wife of Rajaraja- I. She was the daughter of Pazhuvettaraiyar, a small king ruled a part of Chozha kingdom. She helped Rajaraja – I for the construction of the Tanjore big temple. She was very much attached to Rajendra and wants him to become the King after Rajaraja- I.( for that she consumed herbal medicines to avoid conceiving ). A village was also named after her as “Panchavan Maadevi sathur vedhi Mangalam”. .
