The Five Monolithic Temples / The Five Rathas, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mahabalipuram / Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu. – A HERITAGE VISIT

 8th June 2017.
This 8th century  group of monuments are hewn out of solid rock to form five free standing monolithic temples. These temples/ rathas  are associated with the five characters, the Pandavas of historical epic Mahabharata without any basis. These are excavated during the  reign of Narasimhavarman-I.

DRAUPADI RATHA...
The first temple from north is the most elegant of this group with 4 pilasters on four corners and has a niche crowned with makara thorana on three sides and on west two dwarapalakas on either side of the doorway. In the sanctum the relief of Durga the supreme Goddess in Brahmanism with 4 arms standing on the buffalo- demon’s head. In the same panel two males in worshipping posture with kneeling and a man cutting his head to offer to Durga ( Arikandam or Navakandam ) and 4 dwarf bootha ganas.  In front of the ratha is a standing  Lion representing the vahana to Durga.

ARJUNA RATHA...
The next one is the Arjuna Ratha sharing the Draupadi Ratha’s platform. It is a replica of Dharmaraja Ratha. There are carved panels between pilasters on the four sides of Ground and first floors. In the corner panels there are standing dwarapalakas In the centre Lord Shiva is leaning on Nandhi on the south and Indira an Airavata ( some experts has the opinion of Skanda or Muruga ) on the east and Vishnu leaning on Garuda on the north. In the other panels are mithuna  figures or Royal Couples. One of the panels on the east side shows a Rishi with his disciples. Alternating elephant and lion are carved all around the base as supports. The west of the temple projects a portico or a mukha mandapam supported by two pillars and two  squatting line pilasters. A flight of steps, part of monolithic leads up to mukha mandapam. In the shrine guarded by the dwarapalakas, there used to be a head crowned by a Trishul, this represents that the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Behind the Ratha is a colossal monolithic Rishabam, which is in a semi finished state.

BHIMA RATHA...
This temple is in rectangular shape with  a country wagon type curvilinear roof with paddy grass type of carvings. Supported by  4 Squatting lion pillars and 2 pilasters on the west. Since the temple is in rectangular shape the temple might be dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
