HINDUISM TEMPLES - INDIA, STATE, DISTRICTS and OTHER COUNTRIES
This
an attempt to regroup the list of temples I visited with Country, State and District wise. In the previous List the temples
are grouped in the alphabetical order. Some of the readers suggested to group
them for easy identification and searching. Since the Paadal Petra sthalangal/
temples are grouped under 276 Paadal Petra Sthalangal, in that some of the temples may be included in this list also. I
appreciate my readers to point out any further improvement / modifications
required, so that it will help to fine tune the search the temple details
required. Request to leave your comments please…..

Sri Kandaswamy Temple / Thiruporur Murugan Temple / திருப்போரூர் கந்தசாமி கோயில், Thiruporur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.
The kumbhabhishekam of Thiruporur Sri Kandasamy temple was held on
11th September 2014 after renovation. Since we could not
attend the same, we thought of seeking the blessings of Sri
Kandaswamy before completion of mandala pooja. From Madhya Kailash we
took the 19B ( Saidapet to Kelambakkam ) bus on 11th Oct 2014 and reached to
the temple around 17.00 Hrs. Had been to this temple once again on 26th March 2016 and the Photos taken are uploaded : Click Here
The Chidambaram Swamigal, 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Murugan of this temple as
திரனக்கோர் காவல் கொண்டகுறத் தேன்மாது பங்க
திருப்போரூர் அமர்ந்த பெருமாளே...
Moolavar : Sri Murugan.
Consorts : Sri Valli & Devasena
Some of the Important features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing east with a 7 tier Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam with Balipeedam and Peacock vahana mandapam are in front of Rajagopuram. There is also idol / murtis of Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar on the right side of entrance. Moolavar and Valli Devasena are swayambhu, decorated like idols. ( Believed to be made of Palm tree wood - பனை மரம் ). Dwarapalakas are Sudhakar and Sumukar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Koshta Kukkudabjar ( Having flag of cock in his hand. Kukkudam means cock. – Sevar kodiyon – There are 300 names for Lord Subramaniar and one of the name is Kukkudabjar ), Dhandayuthapani, Maha Vishnu and Durga.
In the inner prakaram Urchava murtis ( important are, Brahma sastha, Indra /Deventhiran, Rishabam, Soolas, Shiva
Sakthi,, Murugan Keeping his leg on peacock, Sakara sthapanam and Arumuga Swamy.
In the outer prakaram Urchava
mandapam ( now it is used as Vahana mandapam ), Pillars with bas reliefs are
looks beautiful ), Vinayagar, Shani Bhagawan, Nagars, Fighting
soldiers ( Kedayam on one hand and sword on the other, what for it is installed
here ?. do not know. ), the sthala vruksham Vanni tree and Golden Car / Golden Chariot / thanga ratha
mandapam.
The Devasena sannadhi facing south. In koshtam Vaishnavi, Maheswari, Saraswati and another must be Lakshmi. Dwarapalakas are Sudhakar and Sumukar.
In one of my previous post up loaded some of the photos taken during renovation.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple was constructed during Pallava period. Vikrama Chozha period inscriptions are found in DevaSena Amman Temple. When the temple was in dilapidated condition the same was reconstructed by Srimath Chidambaram Swamigal, who attained samadhi in 1659 CE. His descendants are the Trustees of this temple. Esat Rajagopuram has the 17-18th Century paintings of Kantha Purana.
The 17th Century composed "Mathikettan Drama" mentions Thiruporur Murugan, Kailasanathar and Vembadi Vinayagar.
The Central Govt Archaeological department documented 7 inscriptions, which includes 720 CE Rajasimha Pallava period inscription.
Kulothunga Chozha-I's ( 1076 CE ) inscription records the endowment of burning lamp and continuance of Poojas of this temple. For the same arrangements are made.
Vikrama Chozha also had given gift of lands to this temple.
A Person belongs to Ilanallur, had gifted land for the Uchi kala pooja.
Vijakanda Gopalan's period inscription records the endowment of burning two lamps.
Inscriptions also mentions the Utsava murtis of this temple.
The
rajagopuram was completely painted and a new arch was also constructed near
Temple Tank. Outer parakaram and inner prakaram were completely paved with
granite slabs.

LEGENDS
This is one of the arupadai veedu of Murugan, where the demon Soorapadman was killed on the air.
As per the legend Maha Vishnu and his consort MahaLakshmi were
cursed by Kanva Maharishi. They prayed Shiva to get rid of the Curse. Shiva came
to this place and blessed them. Hence Thiruporur temple is a very significant, dedicated
to the worship of Lord Shiva and Sri Murugan.
As per sthala purana, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena gave protection
to Devas and expounded the meaning of Pranava to Agastya Muni.
According to another legend, Murugan enunciated
the principle of pranava or reality to the Devas here
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Kiruthigai, 7 Days annual festival in the month February, Panguni Uthiram, Thaipoosam, Karthigai deepam, Kandar Sashti, etc,.
While returning from Sri Chidambara Swamigal jeeva Samadhi we have crossed a Vishnu temple. This structure was standing in front of the temple for the function ( Uriyadi ), since the day happened to be a Purattasi Saturday.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 06.00 hrs to 12.30 hrs and 15.30 hrs to 20.30 hrs.
CONTACT DETAILS :

After darshan we went to Thiruporur Chidambara Swamigal jeeva samadhi. We could not get the darshan of jeeva Samadhi, since we were late by 10 minutes. ( Usually devotees are allowed up to 18.00 Hrs ). With a disappointment returned home.
