Sri Chandrasekara Temple, Hampi Ruins, hampi, Karnataka.

This east facing  16th ( some body claims it is 15th century ) century Chandrasekara was built very near to Queens bath.  This temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva.


The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, sabamandapa and mukha mandapa. This temple has a prakara and Rajagopuram is on the east side. The Vimanam over the sanctum was built in Dravidian style with three tiers using bricks and mortar. The sabamandpa has two entrances and the  pillars has the reliefs of saivate  deities.

With this we wounded up our Hampi Ruins Heritage Visit after a brief meeting. Mr Gireesh was presented with a Guide book of Badami with all our signatures and said good bye to each other and get dropped at Bus stand for return journey to Chennai with full of Hampi memories lingering in our minds.  Thanks to Gireesh, Mr Rajasekar, Mrs Vidya and my co-participants for this wonderful heritage visit. Thanks to all once again.

Octagonal Water Pavilion, Hampi Ruins, Hampi, Karnataka.

….a continuation post to Saraswati Temple

This octagonal water pavilion  is a stone throwaway distance from Saraswati temple. This might have been constructed during 16th century. There is a octagonal stage at the centre surrounded by an open mandapam with very simple pillars. The roof and side are plastered with lime mortar and remains of  intricate carvings can be seen on the ceiling. There are holes to get water from outside to this pavilion on each corner of the octagon.

It was around 14.00 hrs when we completed this Octagonal water pavilion visit. Instead of all the way going to Hampi, we decided to brought the lunch to this pavilion.

This 16th century ( 1554 CE ) temple is very close to Chandrasekara Temple. This east facing temple is built on a boulder.  The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, and maha mandapa with three entrances. The super structure, the 2 tier vimana was built with brick and mortar. The Vimana has the stucco images of Balakrishna, Narasimha, etc,.  There is a pedestal with Garuda relief is  available in the sanctum.
 

The mandapam pillars has the reliefs of Balakrishna, Ganesha, Hanuman and  Gopika vastrapaharanam. As per the inscription the originally the temple was called as Thiruvengalanatha, an another form of Vishnu. When this name was changed as Saraswati Temple, nobody knows.

Pattabhirama Temple, Hampi Ruins, Hampi, Karnataka.

This 16th century CE Pattabhirama temple is in Varadharammanapattana, about a km from Kamalapura village on the way to Hampi Power House Camp ( HPC). The temple was supposed to be built by Thimmaraja during the period of Achyutaraya  in 1540 CE.


The temple is facing east is one of the largest temples built in an area of 163.70 x 93 meters. The temple has two Rajagopurams on east and south. The east Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers.

The temple is known for its large ornate pillared Saba mandapas with three entrances, Mahamandapa ( supported by 58 ornate  pillars ) Kalyana mandapa and courtyard with a temple tank in front The Pillars has the reliefs of avatars of Vishnu, rishis, common men, etc,. Dwarapalakas are there at  the entrance of sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, Antarala, Ardha mandapa and Maha mandapa. Thayar sannidhi is built like a separate temple with sanctum, Antarala, ardha mandapa and maha mandapam on the right side of the main temple facing east. The vimanam is of 2 tiers built with bricks.

The temple is under renovation by ASI.

Malyavanta Raghunatha Temple, Hampi Ruins, Hampi, Karnataka.

This 16th century CE Raghunatha temple is one of the living temples in Hampi ruins  on a medium sized hill called Malayavanta Parvatha on the main road between Hospet and Hampli and 2 Km from Kamalapura. This is one of the spatha ( seven ) hills of this region. This hill has globe/ round shaped boulders and natural caves. It is believed that lord Rama  with Lakshmana was wandering in this place called kiskindha during their exile or vanavasa in search of Sita. Sri Rama performed obsequies on this hill to his father Dhasaratha by offering pindas. These pindas latter changed in to boulders. They stayed here for about 3 months during the rainy season.  There are two natural water storage called Rama Done and Lakshmana Done on this hill. This is the place where Hanuman met Sri Rama.

This Raghunathaswamy Temple is facing east with a DeepaSthamba and Garuda’s sannadhi are immediately after the east side 3 tier Rajagopuram. There is a 5 tier Rajagopuram on the south side also. The is a cave temple carved during Viajayanagara Period.

The reliefs of Sri Rama, Lakshmana with Sita and Hanuman are in the sanctum. The temple consists a sanctum, the cave, arthamandapa, Maha mandapa and a muka mandapa. The sanctum Vimanam was built with bricks over the sanctum boulder or the rock.

There is a big Naathanamandapa is on the left and Thayar sannadhi is on the right, both are facing east. The Narthanamandapa was built with ornate pillars and a raised platform at the centre. The pillars has the Vaishnava reliefs.

TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 Hrs to 12.00 Hrs and 17.00 Hrs to 19.00 Hrs.

The temple is on the main road from Hospet to Kampli
About 2 KMs from Kamalapura.
Taxis and Autos are available from Hospet and Kamalapura.

Ganagitti Jain Temple, Hampi Ruins, Hampi, Karnataka.

The Jain’s temple is on the main road, 500 meters from Kamalapura on the Hampi to Kampli Road and very near Bhima’s Gateways dedicated to Kunthunath called Kunthunath jinalaya. This temple was built by Irugappa Dandanayaka in 1386 CE for the 17th Tirthankarar Kunthunath. This temple exists before Vijayanagara.


The temple is facing north with a monolithic manasthamba in front. There is an inscription of Irugappa 1385 CE, a general of the King Bukka II, found on this manasthamba. In the reign of Harihara II, this temple was known as Chaityalaya and it is now called as Ganagitti jinalaya.  The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, artha mandapam, Maha mandapam and two sanctums, which are empty now.  The sanctum the super structure or the vimana with out stupi  is of nagara style with stepped pyramid look, constructed with stone. There is a brick arch above the mukha mandapa with stucco images. The mandapa Pillars has the reliefs related to vaishnava religion.
